SHSAT prep guide: format, question types and a study plan that works

The SHSAT is the single admissions test for New York City's specialized high schools. This guide explains what the test asks, how students should pace themselves, and what an effective study routine looks like from first diagnostic to test day.

What the SHSAT is and who takes it

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test is taken by NYC students in 8th grade (for 9th grade entry) and in 9th grade (for 10th grade entry). Admission to schools such as Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech is based on the SHSAT score alone, ranked against every other test taker and each school's cutoff for that year.

Because cutoffs move each year with the applicant pool, the practical goal is not a fixed number — it is to be as far above your target school's recent cutoff range as your preparation time allows.

Test format and section breakdown

The exam has two sections — English Language Arts and Mathematics — with 180 minutes total and no separately timed sections, so students choose how to divide their time. Each section contributes equally to the scaled score, which means neglecting one subject caps the total no matter how strong the other is.

  • ELA — revising and editing: grammar, usage, sentence logic and paragraph organization in short passages.
  • ELA — reading comprehension: main idea, inference, author's purpose, vocabulary in context and detail-support questions.
  • Math: multiple choice plus grid-in questions covering arithmetic, ratios and percents, algebra, geometry, statistics and word problems.

Timing strategy

A common plan is roughly 90 minutes per section, starting with the subject you are stronger in to bank time. Grid-in math questions carry the same weight as multiple choice but take longer, so leave them for a second pass rather than stalling on them early.

Practice with a clock from the beginning. Students who only practice untimed usually lose 10–20 raw points on their first realistic mock, not because of knowledge gaps but because of pacing.

A month-by-month study plan

  • Months 1–2 (spring/summer): diagnostic, then topic-by-topic work on weak areas. Accuracy matters more than speed at this stage.
  • Months 3–4: mixed daily practice — about 50 questions a day is a sustainable target — plus a full-length mock every two weeks.
  • Final month: weekly full-length mocks under strict timing, and a focused review of the mistake types that keep repeating.

  1. 6–9 months out (spring of 7th grade)

    Take a full diagnostic to get a baseline scaled score and a weak-topic list. Spend these weeks on arithmetic fluency, ratios and percents, and daily reading of non-fiction so comprehension passages stop feeling foreign.

  2. 4–5 months out (summer)

    Work one math topic and one ELA skill per week — for example ratios plus revising/editing punctuation. Accuracy first, speed later. Two short practice sets a day beats one long weekend cram.

  3. 2–3 months out (September–October)

    Mixed practice and pacing

    Switch to mixed sets of about 50 questions a day and add a full-length mock every two weeks. Start timing every set so 90 minutes per section becomes automatic.

  4. Final 4 weeks

    Mocks and mistake review

    One full-length timed mock per week, and use the rest of the week to re-attempt the exact mistake types from that mock. Stop learning new material in the last 10 days; consolidate instead.

  5. Test week

    Taper and logistics

    Cut volume in half, keep a short daily warm-up so the brain stays in test rhythm, confirm your test site and admission ticket, and sleep on a normal schedule for at least three nights.

Roughly 60–90 minutes on weekdays and a longer Saturday block. The Sunday review session is the one most families skip and the one that moves scores most.

Worked examples: how the questions are solved

Math · ratios (medium)

A recipe uses flour and sugar in the ratio 5 : 2. If the baker uses 350 grams of flour, how many grams of sugar are needed?

  • A. 70
  • B. 140
  • C. 175
  • D. 875

Answer: B. 140

One ratio part equals 350 ÷ 5 = 70 grams. Sugar is 2 parts, so 2 × 70 = 140 grams.

Setting it up as a proportion works too: 5/2 = 350/x, so 5x = 700 and x = 140.

Common trap: Choice D comes from multiplying instead of dividing (350 × 2.5). Always check whether the answer should be smaller than the given quantity — sugar is the smaller part of the ratio.

Math · grid-in (harder)

The average of five numbers is 18. When one number is removed, the average of the remaining four is 20. What number was removed?

Answer: 10

Total of five numbers = 5 × 18 = 90. Total of the remaining four = 4 × 20 = 80. The removed number is 90 − 80 = 10.

Common trap: Students often subtract the averages (18 − 20 = −2) and guess from there. On average questions, convert to totals first — averages themselves cannot be added or subtracted directly.

ELA · revising and editing

“Because the storm knocked out power for three days, and the school gymnasium was opened as a shelter.” Which revision best corrects the sentence?

  • A. (no change)
  • B. Because the storm knocked out power for three days, the school gymnasium was opened as a shelter.
  • C. The storm knocked out power for three days, and because the school gymnasium was opened as a shelter.
  • D. Because of the storm knocking out power for three days, and opening the school gymnasium as a shelter.

Answer: B

The original is a fragment: a dependent clause beginning with “Because” joined by “and” to another clause, leaving no independent main clause. Removing “and” lets the second clause stand as the main clause.

Common trap: Choices C and D keep the fragment while shuffling words. Test whether the sentence still has one clause that could stand alone.

ELA · reading inference

A passage describes a researcher who repeats an experiment eleven times before publishing. The question asks what this detail mainly suggests about her approach.

  • A. She distrusted her colleagues.
  • B. She valued certainty over speed.
  • C. The experiment was inexpensive.
  • D. She hoped to win an award.

Answer: B

Inference questions reward the smallest defensible step from the text. Repetition before publishing supports caution and confidence in the result; nothing in the detail speaks to colleagues, cost or motives.

Common trap: Options A and D are psychologically plausible but unsupported. If you must invent a motive to justify a choice, it is wrong.
